My dogs eating eggs.?

For over 2 years we have 5 Chinese Sylkie chickens in the backyard with our two dogs ( GSD & Border Collie). There has never been a problem until now. They love the girls and protect them including rounding them up at dusk if they are late going to the coop. However just recently when I leave the house one or both sneak in and steal and eat the eggs from their nest. I have shown them the broken shells and gone crook at them. I have also added pepper or chilli to the empty shell and rubbed their nose in it. They are normally very obedient but how do I stop them raiding the nest?

I would guess it took them so long to figure out that they like eggs. I would think the easiest would be to make any openings to the chicken coop small enough that the hens can get in, but the dogs can't.

getting mad at the dogs after the facts and rubbing them with chilli won't help unless you get mad at the dog precisely when you catch the dogs in the act. And that will be hard to do reliably.

I guess you could put out some eggs enticingly and teach your dogs the "leave it" command.

Though I don't know how well that will work if you aren't present either.

what the hell.. dont listen to "summer" shock collars are wrong i believe.

however "tigrellion"'s suggestion was great! leave the eggs out in the open when the dogs make a shot for the eggs teach them stand down or something!. maybe even not letting the dogs into the hen coop?? or building the nests so they are higher and a ladder for the hens to walk up?? ah i hope it all works out well eggs are good for dogs coat and skin haha so there is at least some benefit :D

Try getting a remote controlled shock collar and every time they get eggs show them to them and then push the button and soon they will learn.

Source(s): My dog used to run off but doesn't because we used a shock collar.

Enlist the assistance of a trainer to train them to leave the eggs alone...rubbing a dog's nose in something, does nothing to teach the dog what you want it to learn...all they know is you are upset about something, but they don't relate it to haven consumed the eggs (even if you are showing them the egg shells)...dogs are smart, but they don't think like people (they think like dogs)...

Keep them away from the eggs.
