It means god punished people for disobeying him when, until they disobeyed him, they had no idea that disobeying him was evil.

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
Adam and Eve had access to all they needed and all knowledge was available to them just for the asking, all they had to do was trust God and based on that trust obey.
By choosing not to obey based on they trust they chose to do things the hard way. That means knowledge instead of being there for the asking, they had to earn that knowledge by experience.. Mankind as a whole has to collectively learn, advance as a civilization and over thousands of years slowly mature until they reach their full potential.

There is no moral in this. Just the Devil hating God to the point, where he could not harm God, but used his powers to do evil against the God's human creatures, by lying and deception. Period.
God on the other hand can raise humanity out of death and destruction because of Genesis 3:15 through Jesus Christ His Son.

The moral of the story is omnipotent, omniscient beings can also make mistakes.
For example: the Christian god apparently knows everything, but for some odd reason he could not anticipate his brand new creations disobeying him.
