Anyone know how to keep from losing your license when owing back childsupport?

My friends wife left him a year ago and took their 3 kids to go live with her boyfriend. He had a trucking job that worked him all night and then some. He had to keep it to pay the bills, though it was hard. Depression set in and he could hardly cope missing his kids and wife. Then his wife's boyfriend kicked her out. With no place to go she brought the kids back to him, since she was homeless. He could not get, let alone afford to pay for a babysitter all night while he worked all night & all day while he slept, so he had to quit his job. That eventually made him homeless what with not being able to afford his rent, etc., including the child support he'd been paying for a child from an earlier marriage. Depression still being a factor he is now in the position of losing his drivers license if he can't pay 700.00 to 800.00 by June 24 he will lose his drivers license. If he does lose it he will have to pay $2,000.00 to get it back. Does that make sense to anyone? To lose your drivers license if you can't pay your child support? How you going to pay anything if you can't get to a job????? He can't even get a fishing license. Anyway, does anyone know what he can do to keep from losing his license? Thanks.

Are you talking about a commercial trucking license which he needs to renew but does not have the money to renew the license? Tell him to get a job doing anything and petition the court to lower his support payment. The court will work with him. The court will put him on a back payment plan!

  • Yes he can pay his child support or help him out financially yourself.

Does it make sense that kids should hold off on eating food while their dysfunctional parents sort out their lives? Your friend needs to learn how to operate a condom.

The only thing he can do at this point is ask for a modification and to ask to be able to make back support payments rather than a lump sum. He'd have to go to courthouse to file a motion to sit down and talk it out before the 24th. He should not have quit his job to begin with which clearly started this roller coaster going downhill. He doesn't have a choice but to pay support and he needs too keep himself out of back support. Go to the courthouse and talk to someone in family court tomorrow to find out what, if anything, can be done. My brother-in-law has gotten away with all kinds of things.. not saying that this person is trying to get away with anything but their is a child who belongs to him who needs cared for. And he is responsible for that child.

nope child support is ruthless. it makes it way harder on a person when they don't have occupational or drivers licenses but they will tell him to walk and flip burgers. I also suggest he try that and not in a mean way.. right now he cannot get the support order lowered because he quit (if he had been fired he could have had it modified) so if he finds a minimum wage whatever job then he can file a motion to modify the support way down based on his new income and work his way back up paying off the arrears and getting his licenses back. then I suggest he get a good job and don't tell anyone so the support stays low for a while so he can get himself together again, its on her to find out and ask it be modified higher.
