What martial arts should I take?
I'm quiet the heavy 18 year old female, around 155lbs. I would want the type of martial art that uses a variety of techniques: punches, kicks, take downs, etc.

It depends on what you want. I'll list some possible martial arts criteria:
Type
If you want a no-nonsense style I suggest you pick something in the mould of (kick) boxing or muay-thai. If you like a more technique orientated style you come to the likes of Aikido, Pentjak Silat, Karate etc. If you want something principle based you have Wing Chun and Krav Maga.
Element
Martial arts are usually based on an element (wind, earth, water, fire)
Wind: using the opponents energy, passive (aka Aikido)
Water: free flowing movement without stiffness
Earth: pure strength, mental power, internal power, health
Fire: taking down your opponent as fast as possible.
Most martial arts have primary elements on which they focus. Aikido for example focusses on wind and water and is technique orientated. Wing Chun is a pretty rounded style with slight focus on water and fire. The no-nonsense styles are pretty much a combination of fire and earth: quick striking with a lot of power to overpower your opponent.
These are just two criteria to judge which you want to pick. There are so many more to pick one. Aside from this you should just go around town and take trial lessons. Your feeling will usually guid you in what's right.

Goju-Ryu karate incorporates throws, strikes, and joint manipulation (I think). Or Taekwondo. That has throws, punches, and kicks, definitely kicks. If you want to do more MMA style, try cross-training in Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Most BJJ places offer both.

Well if you are really looking into helping yourself and benefit on how to survive if someone attacked you and was TRYING to hurt you, do Krav Maga. If you want a class where you earn belts and get a big ego do something like TKD (Taekwondo) or Jui Jitsu.
