In England, what is a warrant card?

I came across this expression in a book, fiction, if I remember correctly. One of the characters, a policeman, used this phrase.

All of the others so far are correct, basically an ID card.. Some states in the US also have the term.

On the card is printed what the authority the person has under law. Without the card under old common law the officer has no authority

It is the policeman's identity card which demonstrates that he is also a bone fide officer of the law.

They are easily forged and we usually tell the genuine copper by his big feet.
