My Boxer Dog is so Skinny and vet doesn't know why so how can this be?

She just turned 7 yrs. old this year . She is looks so bad sense she has been sick and lost weight. The First thing happened was she was coughing really bad . We did an X-ray to see if her heart was ok sense Boxers tend to have heart problems. The X-ray showed her heart to be ok. So they thought she had phenomena and gave her antibiotics Which helped after three different one's. The cough got better. so now she started loosing weight. We feed her three can's of dog everyday now and give doggy treats and snacks thinking if we feed her more she will gain weight. she still has not gained and only weighs 21 lbs.! she has always been a small boxer weighing around 30 some pounds. so she has lost a lot of weight even still. she doesn't do anything active anymore and we don't even walk her because she is so sick. She doesn't have worms she has been treated just incase and she doesn't have heart worm we did that test too. The blood work is back but when I called the antibiotics vet the lady who answers the phone said there were a lot of things wrong and would be easier for her to tell me what is NOT wrong then what is wrong because there was a lot wrong with it. she did say her white blood cells are real high and she may have anemia but not sure on that yet. and she said the vet is trying to talk to someone else about the blood work before talking to me about it. she said they called UT and was waiting for someone to call them back and when she talks to someone she will call me.

Hi, my sisters boxer was recently put to sleep for something similar. She would not eat and lost most of her weight. It looked like she was being abused so my sister took her to the vet,who also could find no reason. The decision to put her down was taken because it would have been to costly to keep her alive.Sorry to hear about your dog,but wiegh up things before you decide whats best.

First of all feeding just canned meat is not a very good diet for a dog as a good percentage is just water.

Try feeding you dog a "quality dry food" with some canned meat mixed in with it. Change gradually adding more dry to the canned over a week or two.

Has she been tested and x-rayed for possible internal tumours?

A dog with certain cancers will lose weight rapidly and be lethargic.

I`m no vet and can only go on what you have posted, but I would get a second opinion from another vet if she was my dog.

It sounds to me like the vet DOES know why, but wants to consult with a vet who has more experience with whatever disease it is before making a prognosis or treatment recommendations so that you can make the most informed decision possible.

A high white count, anemia, and weight loss and lethargy in a 7 year old boxer immediately brings cancer to mind as a likely cause. But I don't have ANY of the bloodwork information that your vet has, so it could be something else as well (such as a fungal infection, liver infection, kidney infection, or autoimmune disease).

well we did take her to several vets and had x rays done, blood work done and all we could do. we were told to feed her anything she would eat if she wanted it because she was so skinny and she ate a lot and never gained . she end up not being able to walk on her hind legs and had to be carried when she needed to potty and it was so alful to see her in such a bad condition. we had to put her down and the vet said she may have had a blood clot of some kind because he said she was paralyzed in her back legs and he suggest we put her down. she had been through so much and we tried our best to save her. she was the sweetist dog in the world! so sad . also they said she had Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency that is why she ate so much but could not gain weight and told us to feed the canned dog food if she liked it. but that's not the only thing we feed her she still had her dry dog food and other foods as well. the can food was to help her gain weight in addition to her regular foods. writing this so if anyone else goes through this with their dog they may need to know about Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and can look it up online. thanks for the answers and advice you all gave. blessings

It sounds like your vet has done everything and now knows what the problem is, however you have to wait for the return phone call to decide what to do about it.

    You must be really worried.

Presumably Cancer has been ruled out, and Liver disease, and Kidney disease, and Acute Hemolytic Anaemia?

I think you need to ask the vet to check for local Tick-borne diseases as a matter of urgency.
