Is it safe to send money with Royal Mail 2nd Class?

Hi guys

I'm trying to send money to a friend using royal mail because they don't use PayPal or any kind of online banking sort of thing.

Royal Mail recommends using special delivery guaranteed but it costs a lot.

Would it be safe to use other options such as Royal Mail 2nd class or 2nd class signed for?

Recorded delivery doesn't cover cash lost in the post, so you either use normal post and take a chance (and if you are sending notes rather than coins, it's not that big a risk of loss) or special delivery. Much depends on how much cash you are sending. If it's more than £20 or so, why not send it in two or three separate envelopes - only costs 62p a time first class.

If you put cash in the post, without paying for the special service, you take a chance - it might get there, or it might get stolen. If it doesn't arrive you cannot claim any compensation from Royal Mail.

You could send it second class but if it gets lost you will have no claim against the Post Office.

Go into a Post Office and send it Registered Post or Special Delivery. Do not send coin.

Be sure to disguise it then - don't send it in a card, don't leave coins to be felt, best is a Jiffy bag.

It should be safe. I sent money myself on several occasions and it always has arrived. Here are some tips and tricks to send your money in the mail: http://www.leftovercurrency.com/sending-your-curre...
