Can dogs sense when you're going away?

Silly question really. My husband and I are headed out for a meeting/weekend away. My father in law is coming to stay at our house to watch the dog. As soon as I pulled my suitcase out last night, the dog instantly got sad and depressed-like/lethargic. He was really cuddly and attached to us after that.

Was just curious if others experience this? Not a concern or anything, their emotions amaze me sometimes.

Yes. Dogs can pick up on subtle clues through body language even when we don't know we're giving them off. They can also connect certain objects with certain activities - like the suitcase. If you get their leash out, they know what's coming next, or pick up the dog dish or dog food and they know dinner's on the way.

    They are amazing.

Yes they won't consciously think "they're going away" like we do but through previous experiences he has learned that pulling the suitcase out means this. It's purely through association.
