  • Anal Glands? Scooting...?

  • Submissive urination?

I need some help. Recently out fifteen month old schnauzer has taken to urinating in the house periodically. There is a pattern as to what triggers it, but I do not know how to fix it.

It happens during the weekends only. And in the mornings only. Usually during our weekend morning routine of slowly getting out of bed, using the bathroom ourselves, and tidying up, making coffee, etc. I know it not possible for dogs to do things out of spite, but that's really what it seems like. As soon as we ignore him, he pees on something. This never happens when we're not home, ever.

This morning we got up and let him out of his crate and he went outside immediately. I watched him do his business and run around for a bit, and then he came back to the door. Once he came in, I used the bathroom myself. Less than two. Minutes and he had peed on the coffee table. A few minutes later I went to the bedroom to get dressed, and came back out and he had peed on the kitchen table. He is doing this when he is being ignored....except I don't realize we're ignoring him.

I am confident this isn't a health problem or a potty training problem. It's behavioural and I don't know what to do. This has been going on for about two months now. Started after my mother in law watched him for a few days while we were away.

    Any advice?

  • Can dogs sense when you're going away?

Silly question really. My husband and I are headed out for a meeting/weekend away. My father in law is coming to stay at our house to watch the dog. As soon as I pulled my suitcase out last night, the dog instantly got sad and depressed-like/lethargic. He was really cuddly and attached to us after that.

Was just curious if others experience this? Not a concern or anything, their emotions amaze me sometimes.

  • What to do if a tick has bitten my dog?

I pulled a tick off my dog this evening, I believe it's been there most of the day, if not a wee bit longer. There was definitely a bite. I definitely got the entire tick (head and all) when I pulled it off, and it bled a little bit. Is there anything I need to do otherwise?

  • How would I know if my dog is constipated?

I haven't seen him go in 2 days, but he's not displaying any signs of discomfort, nor have I seen him try to go unsuccessfully.

It is quite possible that I am over reacting and have missed his going, as we have 3 acres of land; however, I usually see fresh poops and haven't noticed any for 2 days.

What sort of signs would he display if he was constipated?

7 month old, 13 lb mini schnauzer.

Anyone have any home remedies that work?

  • Where does your dog sleep?

Out of curiosity. Ours sleeps on our bed, because he is crated throughout the day I do not want to keep him in his crate throughout the night. Problem is that he wakes up a lot through the night, and just wants to play or chew bones. I've started to pick his toys and bones up every night a bit before we go to bed, and this is working some times.

Now that he is fully potty trained I would like to leave him out during the day and crated through the night. Just wondering if anyone has done this and had luck?

Where do your dog(s) sleep, and where do they stay when you're not home?

  • Underground Fence?

Does anyone here use one? We recently purchased one, but have to wait for the water in our yard to dry up before we install.

I'm just curious how you trained your dog with it? We have problems with him running (chasing birds mostly) out of our yard. We have 4 acres of rural property...and we now leave our dog on a lead when he is outside (50 feet), even supervised, he's on the lead as we're having a very hard time with the "come" training.

We have walked the perimeter of yard over and over and over and over again, several times a night. This is where the fence will be going.

Just curious how anyone has made out with them. I have a few friends who have had good luck, but they have smaller city properties and partially fenced yards.

  • Dog neutered yesterday and today he has had a lot of erections?

I had my pup (6.5 months old) neutered yesterday....this evening he's had several erections - which appear to be more than just a "little red rocket". He did have one testicle that hadn't descended, so he has 3 incisions in total as they had to search for the other one.

I'm not sure if this is related to the procedure or not, just find it a bit strange. I will be phoning my vet in the morning to see what she has to say about it, in the mean time I don't think it's a problem, but just don't know. Apparently this is common in horses...but obviously my pup isn't a horse :)

    Thoughts?

  • Socializing my Pup?

Does anyone have any advice for how to socialize our 6 month old pup with not only other dogs, but other people?

We have a 6 month old mini schnauzer, whenever people come over he is just SO excited to see them. I am working with him on placement training, and ask people not to pet him or get the high-pitched voice around him, etc. We have brought him for a play date with a friend's dog (2 year old terrier of some sort) a few times but same thing, our pup is just SO excited to see their dog, and it ends up being more stressful for all of us.

We don't see people often as we live in the country with no neighbours, so when people come by it's a treat - so to speak. Our nearest town is still small, rural, and has no dog parks, etc.

Is this just a matter of getting him around people and dogs more often? Or am I totally missing something?

He is just over 6 months old, and not currently neutered (getting neutered on Monday).

    Thank you!

  • What to know about getting dog neutered?

That may sound a wee bit ignorant/generic.

I'm a first-time puppy owner, and my little guy is getting neutered next week. Because one of his testicles hasn't dropped, they have to do an internal surgery as well as a regular neuter for the one that hasn't dropped.

I'm not sure what to expect for afterwards. Should I be prepared to be home the following day with him?

I really like and trust our vet, but I didn't speak with her directly, just the assistant who told me what to do and not to do the day prior to the surgery.

    Thanks!

  • Puppy is no longer sleeping through the night?

This is fairly recent (last few nights).

We crate him in our room to sleep. He has never whined in his crate (not even the first night). Lately, he's waking up every 1.5-2 hours. He doesn't whine to be let out, but will paw at the door of the crate. He wakes up, drinks some water, and goes and finds his toys. Only once through the night he actually has to go potty. Up until this week he would sleep like a rock throughout the night.

I understand dogs don't sleep for 8 hours in a row like humans do, but I'm curious about this all-of-a-sudden change. Could teething, or a growth spurt be affecting his behaviour like that?

  • Why would my 5 month old puppy pee on the couch?

We've had our puppy now for about 3 months, he is a 5 1/2 month old Mini Schnauzer. We're doing a great job on the potty training. 90% of the time he goes to the door to be let out, it seems the other 10% we either don't hear or see him, or he is too excited playing that he just goes.

Last night (Mar 27), he peed on our couch. He has never once shown any inclination of peeing on the furniture (sniffing, etc.). We didn't see it happen as we were cleaning up the kitchen from supper, but found a very large puddle afterwards.

A bit of background info: he got his rabies vaccination on Tuesday (Mar 25), I haven't noticed too much difference in his behaviour as the vet suggested I might. Also, right before we believe the incident happened, he had jumped on the kitchen table, licked the sriracha bottle, and then we yelled at him to get down. Is it possible we scared him?

I'm not so worried about it, but I want to try to prevent it from happening again (obviously). We didn't rub his nose in it or anything like that, I just put him in his crate while I cleaned it up (as he was trying to 'help'). I'm more concerned that we have done something to make him want to pee on the furniture.

    Thanks.
