Underground Fence?

Does anyone here use one? We recently purchased one, but have to wait for the water in our yard to dry up before we install.

I'm just curious how you trained your dog with it? We have problems with him running (chasing birds mostly) out of our yard. We have 4 acres of rural property...and we now leave our dog on a lead when he is outside (50 feet), even supervised, he's on the lead as we're having a very hard time with the "come" training.

We have walked the perimeter of yard over and over and over and over again, several times a night. This is where the fence will be going.

Just curious how anyone has made out with them. I have a few friends who have had good luck, but they have smaller city properties and partially fenced yards.

Update:

I should have mentioned that having 4 acres means not putting up a 'good old fashioned fence'. It's not that simple with a rural property that is a strange size, not to mention how large the yard is. Other animals can enter my yard as it is. I don't leave the dog outside unsupervised, nor do I plan on leaving him out for long periods of time or when we're not home, etc. If the underground fence is TOTALLY unnecessary, and cruel...and fencing my yard isn't an option, then what do you recommend?

Update 2:

So no one here has had any good experience with the underground fence??

Great waste of money. They never work. Dogs can and do run right past them and won't come back because they associate the pain with the yard. It won't stop them from chasing and biting people, wont stop them from chasing and biting other pets, won't stop people or animals from coming in the yard.

You can put up a fence, just fence a portion of the yard. Not hard to do at all. An underground fence won't stop the dog from running off and attacking or chasing some one's live stock or poultry and end up being shot

I've never used one, but my relatives' Huskies used to blow through their's when they wanted to. They have a fenced yard now.

NO don't use one. dog can just run past it & be gone & other animals can enter your yard.

There is nothing better than a good old fashioned fence.

I hate to see electricity used to train a dog, it is cruel. & TOTALLY unnecessary.

Some dogs learn where the boundries are and respect them and are fine with them.

Some dogs don't understand why they feel pain when they go out into the yard, and become scared of going outside.

I know someone who can only get their dog out of their yard by putting them in the car, and driving out of the driveway, they have to do it every time to take their dog on a walk, because he knows leaving the yard other ways cause pain.

Some dogs learn that if they run hard enough, they can run through the shock, and get to the other side... only to be too afraid to come back home. They were motivated to leave (chasing something) but there is no real reason for them to hurt themselves to come back home.

You need to spend 2 weeks to a month at least doing on the leash training. most people put little flags or something up for a while for a visual of the border for the dogs.

Basic in training your dog for an underground fence.

Also, I strongly suggest you try the collar on yourself at least once. If you aren't willing to know what the shock feels like, you shouldn't do it to your dog.

    Good luck!
