Can anybody help me make sense of the movie Mulholland Drive?
I made a mistake in choosing to watch this for movie night. I am confused beyond belief. All I got out of it was that Diane Sellwyn is the real Betty Elms. Betty is Diane's alter self, her dream imitation or fantasy of a better life. Diane is a failed actress who had a friend named Camilla Rhode's that destroyed her life. Camilla got all the best parts and she completely overshadowed Diane. At somepoint the two were involved romantically but the relationship was broken off on account of Camilla falling in love with the director to a movie. Diane ends up plotting Camilla's murder on Mulholland Drive and she feels guilty and ends up killing herself. The thing I don't get is how Rita, Camilla's alter self is figured into this. Was Rita the way Diane wanted her to be? Was she what Diane craved for Camilla to be? I don't know...I am so confused. I didn't know any of this until after I saw the movie and I had to go back online to read the plot and dream analysis quota. Anybody who saw this movie and understands it completely please fill me in. I am so lost. I made a big mistake, but I have to know what it was all about. Thank You.

This might help. Everything you see that is not real is THE DREAM SHE IS HAVING BEFORE SHE WAKES UP. Remember how the very first shot after the junebug intro was her putting her head down on the pillow? This means she is falling asleep. Its a film about the dream this woman is having, of course we find out about what is going on in her real life too which is equally important.
I do think we are seeing an idealized version of rita during the dream sequence. Very intelligent observation. Really got me thinking about one of my favorite films again.
You can see mulholland drive 20 times and pick up on something new every single time. Definitely in my top 3 with taxi driver and eyes wide shut.

You pretty much understand it. It's a David Lynch movie, so it's not really important to pick apart every little detail of the film. There is a lot of symbolism, but there is no point trying to 'explain' it, just enjoy the ride. Or, if you do want to explain it, any theory you have is just about as valid as any other. If you really want confusing, watch the next (and last) film Lynch made, "Inland Empire".

Excellent but very confusing. I forgot what it was about but read somewhere that you have to watch it move than once to get it and even then you can't understand the whole thing. As Max said, "just go along for the ride"

Nope, as I have not seen it yet, but this is a good reminder because I've been wanting to watch it for awhile now.
