stuck piston?

I asked the other day about a stuck piston on a atv, I took the caliper completely off, detached the parking brake from the caliper, the piston went right in. doing that though pushed the pin in the back to stick out so far that the parking brake wouldn't go back on because the pin was sticking out too far. I backed off the screw on the parking brake till it would fit flush again to the caliper. I put new fluid in and pumped the brake and the piston is stuck out again. jesus. the pads are tight against the fly wheel. isn't the piston suppose to move back into position after releasing the brake ? I am going to take it apart again and push the piston back in while waiting for ideas. a for sale sign AS IS coming soon. Thanks in advance, I don't know how to reply here.

Hi idahotrix, I don't know anything about ATV's but I'll take a guess or two...

If the caliper is the same in function as a car brake caliper, the seal is what retracts the piston, but only a few thousands of an inch, just enough for clearance.

In troubleshooting this, think about the hydraulics and the mechanics.

Maybe fluid pressure is holding the piston out, open the bleeder or crack the hose loose and see if that frees up the piston a bit. If so, look upstream for trouble, such as a master cylinder not releasing or a hose that is restricting pressure.

Remove the parking brake and then see if the binding is gone, if so then troubleshoot the P. Brake.

Be certain that the caliper itself is free to slide or float, if it or any of it's bushings are binding the brake will remain applied.

    Hopefully helpful...

as is and sell, do not take this car near the road.

the majority as they as answer do not know as the car .

and you need to get a proper mechanic as to do so, at least they with knowledge as to do so, it takes two to Tango- or dance your way to prison- as the car as it is.
