How many Americans actually ever use their gun for self-defense?
If Americans never actually use their gun except for target shooting, why are they so scared of having it taken by the government?

How many Americans actually ever need their seat belts or motorcycle helmets? The fact you rarely need something doesn't negate its worth.
> why are they so scared of having it taken by the government?
Because the Supreme Court has decided the police aren't are't responsible for your safety as an individual only society as a whole. This is a fancy legal way to say the state couldn't afford all the lawsuits so the cops get a pass if they drop the ball and someone dies. In both these court cases people died because the police didn't respond in a timely manner.

WASHINGTON, June 27 - The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation.

Yes, I have used my gun in self defense. In answer to your question, it is my RIGHT to have a gun for protection. If you take all the guns away from the good guys, who is left to have the guns? The bad guys. The ONLY reason I go to the gun range is to ensure that my skills are still intact so when I need to have my gun to protect myself it's the bad guys that get shot, not myself or my family.

We have a right to those guns. For any legal reason we wish to own them. We may never need to use them, but if the government comes for them, you'd better believe most will.

OK, the only reason why because American Law Enforcement agencies isn't always around to babysit every resident who is afraid of the gangs or a possible threat from the attackers. It cost money for police to patrol every neighborhood that isn't a possible threat and it could subject the police to attack as well. That's dictatorship and no one wants that.

Never. I just show off with my buds at the range. We have a competition, to see who can buy the most expensive.

I have.
In 1987 I was working in an apartment building, refurbishing a apartment, when some idiot walks in, locks the door behind him, and tried to rob my brother-in-law and myself by saying he had a .38.
He said, and this is an honest to God quote, "Give me your wallets or I'll fill you full of lead like a pencil."
Instead, we pulled a handgun and held him until the police arrived. Nobody got shot. He went to jail. We went home.
Later before the trial, we spoke to the prosecutor and she told us he had a long record of theft and robbery. His first crime was at 12 years old, stealing a case of cookies from the Sunshine cookie company.
Anyway, he pleaded guilty to 1 count of armed robbery and got some time.
