Cleaning ash out of sand? (Incense)?

Is there a way to clean/separate ash from a bowl of sand used to hold incense sticks?

I know it's a silly question but I have white sand & have really begun to get into incense burning.

    Ash dissolves in water. So if you have a really fine cloth you can use, I'd soak the sand and use that cloth to wring out as much water as you can.
