How to remove my dogs eye matts?
So my dog is a cocker spaniel cavalier mix so she has long thick hair. We'll I know she had "eye boogers" but I came home from vacation today and my boyfriend had cut the hair away from her eyes as it was blinding her and I noticed just how big the tear stains were under her eyes. Upon closer observation I realized that it wasn't just staining but her "eye boogers" are caked on and matted into pretty much rocks! I've had this problem with her before but not this bad and I don't want to hurt her trying to get the things out! I was hoping somebody had some solution to safely and comfortably remove these boulder-like nuisances from my poor girls face.

A groomer will sort her out, BUT you must have her eyes checked to find out why there's all this weeping. Entropion/ectropion (turning in of the upper lid and excessively out of the lower one) can happen and if bad enough, the turned in part, it will affect the cornea. A vet should be asked to check what's going on before this becomes chronic and affects the actual sight.

The pet store sells wipes for this problem. Spaniels are more prone to this problem and seasonal allergies make it worse. I have cut them off my dog when they get really bad. Other times I use the wipes. The wipes sort of dissolve the matts.

Other than washing her face with warm water, no. BUT I bet a professional groomer can fix her up.
IMO, the more import "FIX" would be to get to the ROOT of the problem. Eye bugers are usually due to food allergies. BEEN THERE!
Why not figure out what she is allergic to (like maybe grain, peas or a protein) & remove it from the diet? The buger GLOOP can also be worse, due to the tearing, but they are separe issues.
Tearing usually happens in dogs with extra eye lashes (that turn inward) & irritate the eye's surface. It can also be due to dry eyes. The scratchy eye lashes can be removed by your vet (plucked) & there is a 50% chance they will not return. "Angel Eyes" added TO the food will not prevent tearing, but can stop the staining of the coat.

Cotton wool and WARM saline,
Hold against eyelid till it softens, then wipe away.
Do one eye at a a time.
