Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do -- or not do -- something without external enforcement. That certainly does mean studying, but it is more. In most universities, you are pretty much on your own in terms of getting up, eating, going to class, getting your laundry done, doing your homework, taking the initiative to meet with your professors, turning in your work, getting enough sleep, not getting drunk or high or arrested.

Kids who flunk out do so for many reasons, but the top ones are not being strong enough academically to begin with and not have the discipline to do the work.

Think of college as a full-time job. For every hour you are in class, expect to spend two hours doing homework/studying. Just because you don't have a class, it doesn't mean you don't have something to do. Make a schedule. Find the place(s) where you study best: some kids are fine in their dorm rooms, other prefer the library and still others do best in a coffee shop.

You need to schedule fun time too. It is fine to attend a party, go to a football game, watch a TV show or just hang out with friends. Just don't waste your time. Some kids stay up way too late streaming so silly TV show on their computer, then over sleep and end up behind in homework and missing class.

Remember how much this is costing you and/or your parents. If you aren't really dedicated to give your all; don't go to college yet.

    Hey,

College is a huge deal compared to some of the lower educational institutions that you have been at. One of the first things that you notice is that Teachers don't care at all what you do. Therefore you actually have to make sure that you are on track all of the time.

    How to increase your self-discipline?

    1) Create a to do list. Make this list the night before and try to get everything done. You can extend this idea by reordering this list with the most important task on top.

    2) Add a stop watch to your working time. Tell yourself that you will spend at least xx amount of time working on this homework, studying, or taking notes. Then you can get a small break. An example would be to give yourself 45 minutes of study time and then a 15 minute break.

Either way, self-discipline comes down to being prepared and just forcing yourself to keep on doing what you do instead of leaving it for the last minute things.

There is no special way to prepare for college you must understand that since college is one step higher in education you will have to devote longer time to your study. However, it will be much easier if you plan a schedule and allot time for your studies accordingly. this way you will be able to balance your study as well as your other social activities.

    Good Luck
