Can scratching lead to hair loss?

There is this one small spot on my head that always seems to get itchy so I think nothing of it and usually scratch it like it's no big deal.

Recently I've noticed that hair hasn't been growing much in the spot and I'm kind of worried I'm balding.

No one on my mother's or father's side are bald which is why I don't believe it is a genetics thing.

If I stop scratching the area, could the hair grow back? It isn't too noticeable.

What other factors might be contributing to this?

I'm only 18 so I'm kind of bothered by this.

Thanks for any ideas.

Update:

definitely not lice or ringworm.

I just want to know about the hair loss for the most part.

You could have lice. You will scratch your head a lot when you have it.

I know some of my campers can get ringworm from pools and locker rooms.. it's a pretty common rash and easy to catch. It goes away easily with treatment, though :)
