australian Passports?
My son was born in Australia 1971 . He held a australian passport after he was born but it never got renewed . Mother and Father both Australian citizens but one born in Nz and the other in England. He is 43 now and would like another Australian passport. I believe he couldn't renew his old one after the year 2000 . He lives in Switzeland married to a Swiss but uses a english passport which he was entitled to he also at one stage had a NZ passport. I always thought he had birth right being born in 71 but someone told him he needs to re apply for Australian citizenship. Father is now deceased. Mother. brother sister and their families all have Australian passports and live in Australia. he is a good citizen . No criminal record. Is their any reason he can not get an Australian passport. I hope not.

He was definitely an Australian citizen when he was born however if he acquired another citizenship before 2 April 2002, he lost his Australian citizenship automatically. Note that if he acquired another citizenship at birth (e.g. automatic British citizenship by descent by virtue of having a British parent), that did not result in the loss of his Australian citizenship but if he APPLIED for NZ citizenship by descent or any other citizenship, he is not currently an Australian citizen.
If he lost his Australian citizenship because he acquired another before April 2002, he must apply for resumption of citizenship before he can apply for an Australian passport.

If he didn't ever lose his Australian citizenship, he can simply apply for a passport.

When your son received his first original passport, you as parents would have had to submit identification as in the way of a birth certificate etc, he will need to do the same. He will need to go to the nearest office of the Australian High Commission, Embassy or Consulate, and complete the necessary paperwork, have photos, and pay the fees.
Now that I have said that, if he has held a British Passport and it has expired, would be just as easy to renew that.
