Sound bar for television question?
I want to add a sound bar system to my living room television. My question is I do not want the sound bar always on, if I am watching regular tv I want the regular tv speaks on, if I put on a movie with my blu-ray player, or watching say football on tv, then I would want the sound bar to play, is that possible? I have not purchased a unit yet, so I am just looking for general knowledge. And is the sound bar hooked into just the tv, or would I need to hook it into the blu-ray as well? if it is hooked into the tv would it always be on, or do you need to power it on and off each time you want to use it.

If you hook it up in the following manner, you will have the control you want. If you hook the line out audio of the TV into the line in of the sound bar, you will have TV speaker audio whenever you select "speakers on" in your TV's settings menu and you will not have line out audio to the sound bar. When you turn this setting to off, you will have the line out output from your TV to the sound bar (just be sure to turn the sound bar on. For movie watching, there are digital inputs in the back of the sound bar close to the line in input we discussed. Use one these digital input for your movies by selecting the appropriate audio input on the remote. If you you have a digital output from your TV (in addition to the line out analog output) don't use it because usually digital audio is output from TVs no matter what but experiment a little here because different manufacturers do it a little different sometimes. My sound bar is by Sony and has two analog and two digital inouts for audio.

Look at your HDTV Audio setup menu. In many cases you have to go in and turn ON the optical output to feed a soundbar/receiver which also turns off the TV internal speakers.
But a soundbar tends to be OK to run all the time.
