Actually James, there is or was a location in Country NSW, I came across a guy doing about of foraging, He picked up a few specs. There is gold, but you need to know where to look, and how to retrieve it.
Then you have to deal with the big boys.

Many roads in Victoria have a base made from quarried gravel that contains gold. People use metal detectors in old gold mining areas and occaisionally pick up nuggets.

Yes. There is a good series of metal detecting video on YouTube by NQ Explorers who sometimes go looking for gold and find it. Like anything else, you have to know where to look.

yes but Australia is a huge country. I have been with a detector looking for it but wasn't lucky enough. Some people do find it. It is easier to find after big rains But really you may have just as much luck as winning lotto.

You can easily find gold on the surface or close to it in stream beds if you know where to look. There is plenty of gold left.
