Romance in teen fantasy novel, opinions from readers?

I'm writing a fantasy/historical novel taking place in a made up world with early 1800s type technology. The main plot involves a teenage son of a wealthy noble running away from home to investigate and try and stop a plague going around the country. Obviously this is not a romance, but there is a love interest. I know that people are sick of love triangles and twilight-esqe hormonal whiners, but the love interest seems to be fairly common in teen books I've read. I was wondering what are some of your opinions on love interest sub plots. Are there any particular cliches that drive you crazy? Any examples of what to do or what not to do? Things you like in a romance sub-plot? Amount of time to devote to the actual romance?

Any advice is appreciated. My goal is to publish. I want to know what other readers of teen fiction like or don't like.

Not a teenager but don't think time changes much with what really inspires a reader that would be attracted to a book of this type. Also this comes from a male perspective.

The love interest best portrayed as a beautiful, honest, innocent, virginal girl from a peasant or common type family. The wealthy noble is best portrayed as someone who helps the plague develop in some way and the teenage son realises this and since he is an idealist he is rebelling against his fathers way of life. He seeks freedom from a controlling and corrupted home environment and just wants the pure, natural beauty in the world. The teenage boy is attracted to the beauty and innocence of the girl rather than living and perpetuating the lifestyle of his wealthy, but greedy, selfish and destructive noble family that is polluting the world to create this plague. Best making both the teenage son and the peasant girl virginal so that their union is pure and innocent to help illustrate the unadulterated and idealist world that these rebel teenagers seek. The two teenagers work to stop the nobleman's business that causes the pollution that creates the plague. Blend the consummation of their relationship with the overcoming of the plague through destruction of the nobleman's business and therefore the pollution. A blossoming, new environment of fresh beauty can be developed into the plot for the marriage and ongoing romance of the two idealistic and now not so innocent lovebirds..

Maybe this is more romantic than what you were seeking but just gives some ideas. Good luck with it.
