We have bought 1 year old black retriever from a Shelter. The person who we got him told us Avenier( dogs name) was neutered.?

My wife asked me why Avenier is showing his penis. Yes, it was protruding from his male place. Does a dog normally do this when he is neutered?Since we have beem married we have had 2 other males of diffrent breads and we never saw this on them.Is this dog neutered? He also has testicles.

Dogs can show their penis when HOT or when "excited". It is not as uncommon, as you obviously assume. ('ve been in dogs 30 years.)

I'd have a vet examine him (& his testicles) as to whether he is neutered, or not. Many shelters ONLY neuter right before the dog goes home, so they don't pay to neuter dogs who will be destroyed, if not adopted within their TIME LIMIT. (Therefore, there is often enough swelling from the surgery & trauma to the area) for the sac to still LOOK full, for days thereafter.

Of course, if you palpate the dog as having two firm spheres (yourself) he will need to be neutered. IMO, if he is intact, you are owed some of your adoption fee BACK. Your vet can provide a letter indicating the dog was NOT neutered -for you to show the shelter or you can take him back by (plus all adoption paperwork) & arrange to have it done, since you already PAID for the service. Shelters charge far less than private vets, for a neuter.

Dogs may still let the penis protrude from the sheath after being neutered. Sometimes an elderly dog can't help it as the muscles weaken.

Did you get any medical papers with the dog? Some shelters are doing zinc neuters now, which keep the testicles attached (but they do shrivel after a while).

Every new dog should be examined by your own veterinarian within a couple days of acquiring it. Talk to your vet about this dog's sterilization status.

Anatomy lesson: a dog's penis has a bone in the core, making it stiff all the time. Some dogs will show a bit when they sit down or strain to poop. This is normal. The 'male place' is the sheath, sort of like a human male's foreskin. It protects the delecate skin of the penis and keeps it close to the body to protect the thin bone as well.

The penis sticking out has nothing to do with hormones. Its all physical. A neutered male can extend his penis and penetrate a female in heat just as well as an intact male.

a dog's 'erection' occurs after penetration, where the tissue of the penis fills with blood and expands. a bulbous area near the base called the 'knot' will swell and lock him inside the female during mating, ensuring his semen stays inside her and fertilizes her eggs.

So even if his penis shows, he's not getting an erection. Its just the skin pulling back a little to show the tip of his penis. Chill.

Dogs can definitely show the "red rocket" from time to time even if they are neutered. They shouldn't, however, have any testicles! If there is a sack, it should be empty. An easy way to check is to feel it. If there are two round forms in there, then he isn't neutered. If he just got neutered like a few days ago, it may just be swollen or filled with fluid making the sack look prominent.

My male GSD (8 months) was recently desexed.

He does still show his penis when excited.

A neutered dog does not have testes, but still has the 'sack'(scrotum). A quick way to check would to be to feel this sack. It should be empty (although recently neutered dogs tend to be saggy or firm) but of you can feel two separate 'balls' (testes) within the sack, the dog is not neutered.

If he is in fact entire, you should get a partial refund for the dog (neutering fee)

Testicles haven't been removed when a dog's neutered for many decades. And many dogs' penises will come out, especially when the dog's sitting, simply because the skin of the sheath is loose. Don't know why anybody would think that has anything whatsoever to do with being neutered!

If he has testicles he is not neutered.
