Why does my Beta fish not eat food after it sinks?
When I feed Fishy, some of the little pieces sink and land on top of racks and decorations in his tank. He never eats them. Before I do a test and see how long it would take him to get hungry enough to scout around and find the easy to find sunken food, I wanted to ask on here and see what answers you have. Thank you.

I have had several betta fish over the years and from what I can tell is that betta's like food that has a bit of movement to it.. hence you have floating pellets which are being moved by gentle filtration movement in the water or some air movement when the pellets are floating above. This floating pellet movement thus entices the betta to eat making it feel that this pellet is somehow "alive" in a sense. So once the pellet sinks onto the substrate in the tank.. the pellet thus loses its movement and the betta loses interest in eating the sunken/motionless (seemingly dead) food.
Now if you have a betta that is a picky eater than I recommend Hikari's frozen bloodworms or similar (not freeze dried) or New Life Spectrum betta formula (Betta's LOVE this stuff, you can find YouTube videos on it even), my betta gets around 6-8 of these tiny pellets a day, and if your betta starts spitting out food than you're feeding it too much.. or rather too much food at one time.

Bettas are built to eat food from above. They have an upturned mouth to facilitate this so it would be more of an effort to scavenge from the bottom than it would be to wait for more ffood from above. I always suggest feeding bettas pellets rather than flake because they are easier to feed fewer so you don't over feed and easier for the betta to take all of them instead of having little bits of flake the fish won't even bother with settling in other parts of the tank.

I think some foods are more palatable than others to the Siamese fighting fish or Bettas. I switched to Nutrafin Max Betta Food.It made all the difference. If you need to whet his appetite try a few frozen brine shrimp if possible. Good luck and have a great year.

The same thing is happening to me my fish doesn't eat the food I give him but when I leave him alone he eats.it could be that your betta is blind look and see if his eyes are clear if they aren't your betta might be blind. Also you can hold up a mirror to it and see if it does something if it doesn't it might be sick.
