Do you think a landlord/manager would tell the truth if I asked if there were roaches?

May sound like a silly question, but has anyone ever straight up just asked management in the negotiating stage of getting an apartment if there is a problem with roaches or other pests in the apartment? I'm moving to another state on a short notice and wont have time to check it out, just have to trust other tenant's reviews. It seems they wouldn't tell me even if there were because they want me to rent there.

Update:

I don't know, this was something I never had to deal with until I moved to the South. I grew up in Pennsylvania and roaches were something I only heard about, never saw. Then I moved to Louisiana, different story. Now I'm going to Texas and I heard they're bad there. I love living here just one thing I really don't like.

They likely would, if they even remember. Every landlord will at some point accidently rent to a dirty tenant who moves roaches in with them. Once the battle to destroy them is over they may forget about it though, there is always a new problem.

If you can't see the place before you rent, you would have to ask and believe the landlord tho they will probably play down the fact if there are. If you've read reviews that helps, if there's a big problem then people would mention it.

Just know, there are occasionally roaches everywhere. Roach traps (they call them roach hotels) near water pipes under sinks really helps get rid of them.

Cockroaches are so common that there probably isn't a building in the country where you couldn't find some if you looked carefully.
