What documents does a minor need in order to get a passport?
I'm going to Costa Rica next June and I need to get my passport pretty soon. But I don't live near the DMV so I would like to get all the documents ready ahead of time so it's not too long of a process. I'm 16 and have my permit as my ID. I won't get my license until September. Do I need anything besides that, my social security card and birth certificate?

You will also need a parents permision. You may o need other documents if your parents are divorced or if one of them is dead. Go to the US post office website & click on passport application. It will tell you all you need to know.

You do not get a passport at the DMV. You use the site below and follow all directions there. You can print out the application form or go to the post office and ask for one. when you have your form and all your papers ready you take it to the post office to turn in. site below tells you everything you need. You will need one parent to go with you and your birth certificate is one thing you do need.
http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/... It takes about 6 weeks to get a passport. Since you are 16, you will get your first adult license. You need a parent since you do not yet have your own I.D. if you wait til you have that, you do not need a parent to sign for you.

In Indiana, we go to our post office and apply there as well as get the photo taken. You should call your Main Post Office and talk to the people there who can tell you, as a minor child, what you may need and if a parent has to go with you to apply.
