YAC says that it is the stuff of movies, etc ... and she is right.
It is usually the motivating plot point. It is considered SO hideous that it causes heroic action on the part of others. It justifies extreme action on the part of the authorities, etc.
It is not condoned, its hideousness is used as a motivator. There is a *HUGE* difference.
Think of the number of Western movies that start out with the hero's wife/children being killed, and then the hero goes on and takes vengence (sometimes in a lawful way, unless you're Clint).
Is it a "murder" culture? Does the fact that the murder in the beginning justifies the rest of the movie make it a "murder" culture?
The "Rape culture" is a red herring used by feminists to get more resources for women's safety. Women have never been safer than they are today, yet they still demand safety over men.
Seriously, are there any movies out there were the rape of some woman was considered the reward, the payoff, FROM THE AUDIENCE'S POINT OF VIEW?
We do NOT live in a rape culture.

Well, to answer your question in the mindset I'm sure you'd like it in, that is because back in the day when the whole 'men owning women' viewpoint was more prevalent, 'your' woman would be something to protect. If someone raped 'your' woman, then that would be a problem, wouldn't it? If someone attacked what was yours? (Like if someone stabbed your dearest pet, I guess? These similes aren't helping and I realise that...)
Rape and violence against women was (and possibly is still I suppose) seen as purposely attacking a weaker victim who can't fight back. That would be like punching a guy in a wheelchair in the face - that is pretty taboo, a thing you just 'don't do', so it's the same.
As for sexism - I'd say that's a lot less taboo, depending on what kind. I mean, a sexist joke nobody really in the long run gives much of a damn over, but perhaps something like unequal pay...? Still not much of a taboo, honestly, it's just something I think a lot of people have accepted as happening and there's not much you can do about it. The attitude for rape/violence is a lot different.

Apparently they must have missed the part about rape being a felony crime, second only to murder.
They also missed the part about women now having equal voting rights, the fact women are as free to run for political office as men, the fact women now can and do become CEOs. the fact that women can own their own business, and in fact are advantaged over male-owned businesses.
Feminists seem to have very selective knowledge which shapes their opinion of the culture we live in.

If mutant seven-legged ducks from Saturn were behind Pearl Harbor and the Boston Bombings, why is theft taboo?
The answers to our question are exactly the same.

Is sexism and violence/rape against women taboo? It is the stuff of novels, TV shows and movies. It happens constantly. Just look at GS with so many of the questions with a anti-female bias:
Why do femenist hate us 30+ men who desire 18 year old girls over them?
Why are men better than women at everything?
Why can't feminists take some personal responsibility when they have an unwanted pregnancy?
In what ways are feminists parasites?
and the list goes on.
Patriarchy is a traditional belief that men control society and if you look at any indicator - wealth, number of politicians or number of CEOs, number of females versus males murdered by their spouse you see men are still very much on top.

Feminists claim that sexual violence and rape is *not* taboo, and that we live in a "rape culture" caused by the "patriarchy"
