Exercises/workouts for a teen male?

Hi.

I'm 15 years old and school is starting up again in about three weeks. I'm 5 ft 8 in (maybe nine inches) and I weigh 173 lbs. As you can tell I'm kind of overweight and I'm already starting to change that by drinking water instead of soda. But I've heard from many places that just dieting doesn't work and I also have to exercise and workout.

I'm completely out of shape:

10-15 proper pushups

20 crunches

I can probably run 1/4 of a mile before I get really tired and I cannot do a full situp or pull up. Are there any routines or particular exercises I should start doing to burn some calories, get in better shape, and maybe even build some muscle?

Thanks for your time and helpfulness :)

diet alone can help you lose weight, but what you want to do is lose weight and gain some muscle.

as to exercise, aerobics are best, anything where you move your legs, carry your weight, and breathe comfortably. marching or dancing to music or a video is great. shadow box (with footwork), hula hoop, walking up and down stairs, a brisk walk. if you have access to an elliptical machine, try that.

to get your upper body involved, carry a small weight in one or both hands, a dumbbell if you have one or just a bag of rice. lift your arm on each step, press it overhead, punch it out, raise your straight arm to the front or out to the side. change hands and do it again. increase or decrease the weight as needed..

do what you can to begin, hopefully a half hour a day. work up to any hour a day. try to find an activity you like (or at least can tolerate) so you will do it longer.
