can you get hiv this way?
so i went to get my blood work done today and i had to sit on a chair to get my blood drawn. right behind my chair was those containers where you put the used needles in. my little cousin was with me when i got my blood drawn. he's curious so he saw the container and asked me what it was. i said "it's nothing, don't worry about it." and he was so curious about it that he put his hand in it. i started to freak out. i looked inside and there was needles with the plastic tubes with blood in it. i told my cousin to wash his hands immediately. is there a risk for him to get hiv because he stuck his hand in the container with the needles?

What I don't understand is why, in 2014, this lab would have a sharps in arms reach of a curious child? Or even one that you're able to stick your arm into it?
Now, I'm pretty sure he is safe. Every needle I've used has a safety feature on it that you engage after use. It's almost impossible to get stuck by a used needle if the safety is latched (straight needle) or pulled back (butterfly). I honestly think your little buddy is okay, and that there isn't anything to worry about.

If he didn't start crying while his hand was in the container, he wasn't stuck by any needle to be infected. Only if he had an open sore on his had could he have been exposed by blood. I would imagine he is safe.

I would worry if he got poked by any thing inside there. Did he feel that he got poked? I would worry if he got poked.
