Good communication and trust are the basis of a strong relationship. I'm not sure about the gut comment, but your asking about foreplay shows that he is communication challenged. And it seems that he really doesn't want to share with you how he really feels. I would have loved to be asked a question like that in my younger years.
But it's a deep subject. And the question is about your bf, not MY feelings about sex, or foreplay, or communicating, so I will stop here.
