Haircut question?

My bday is coming up and I want to get a mohawk but my hair from the back is kinda short my question is when you have a mohawk is normally the front of your hair a little longer than the back and if not is it possible to get a mohawk without them cutting the back of my hair because it's too short I want my front hair to be the exact length as my back hair is that possible

It depends on the kind of mohawk. A mohawk, by definition and the original form at least, is short hair or bald on most of the head, then a thin streak of of long hair that is less than half an inch wide and spiked outward all the way from forehead hair line to hair line on the neck. These mohawks are usually really really long and seen in mostly vintage punk era people, and are quite rare these days. The new version of the mohawk is more of a thinned out fohawk. These haircuts are a strip of hair about an inch or two wide that is only about 5 inches long if that long at all, and again spiked or raised from the forehead hairline to the hairline on the neck. But with either version, new or old, you will see that the hair generally gets thinner in width as it gets closer to each of the hair lines. So think of a parabola, the farther you get from the forehead/neck hairline the wider the mohawk gets. As far as length, the older punk mohawks were usually the same length the whole way, but the newer short style mohawks are longer in the middle, shortest toward the neck and in the middle toward the forehead. A mohawk is loosely based on a taper-type hair cut, but the difference between lengths is a lot larger than the normal fade. Even if you get a buzz with the same length all around, the hair on the back of your head will usually look shorter because it is usually pushed down by resting your head against a car seat or a couch or something, the hair in the middle of your head is usually seen as the longest because the high point of the skull is right before it drops off to the back of your head so the hair is not actually longer but it looks like it is longer because the hair is higher up and so it stands higher to begin with, and lastly the hair toward the forehead is usually a length in the middle of the middle of your head and the back of your head because it is not at the highest point and there is nothing forcing the hair to stand down unless you wear a hat. The newer mohawk tries to replicate this shape of the head so the hair is the longest in the middle, shortest on the back of your head, and then a middle length for the hair toward the forehead just like the hair on your head. And the hair is not like steps, although that might look pretty cool if you can pull it off, its a gradual length that gets longer toward the top of your head and then short toward the extremes. You could have a mohawk with a taller front so that it slopes down and cuts off at the highest point. You have to understand that having a mohawk, usually means that you do not care what people think of you or your hair style. So don't get all uptight with the specifics of it. Just go to a place and explain to them what you want and they can make it look good. Even a bad haircut at a good place is better than a good haircut at a bad place. My dad cut my hair int he garage for the first 14 years of my life, then I wanted a mohawk and was enlightened with the options/abilities of the professionals so I have gone to a place to get my haircut ever since, and I rocked a fohawk with long for the mohawk strip but not exactly short around the strip, and I had it for about 2.5 years (I called it my shark fin because my nickname was The Shark). I pulled it off well because it was a part of my identity as The Shark to other people, even teachers called me "shark" so it just felt right. When I had it as a sophomore in high school I was made fun of a little bit for it but I ignored all that crap and praised for the hairstyle as a senior because it was a part of me and not just some style/trend.

A mohawk is a relatively high ridge of hair down the center of the top of the head from the front hairline back and then down the center of the back of the head. The ridge can be longer at the front or shorter; it depends on the shape of the skull and the overall desired shape of the mohawk. The rest of the top, back and sides up to the ridge of hair are shaved to the skin. Mohawks and faux hawks fully suit almost no possible combinations of male face and skull shape, making even a guy with an oval face shape appear to have a diamond face shape.

"Oval: The oval face is the ideal shape. It is designated as the "egg" shape. It is wider at the forehead and tapers to a well rounded chin. This type of face looks equally becoming with hair worn low or high on the head; and likewise, either a center or side part or no part at all is becoming. depending somewhat on other facial characteristics."

L.S. Trusty, "The Art and Science of Barbering" pg129.

The ridge of hair needs to be turned 90 degrees and placed at the front hairline, in other words, a short pomp(pompadour) style-crew cut, ivy league(long crew cut), flat top crew cut. A good barber can usually design a regular haircut or one of the short pomp styles to fully suit most young guys. Most girls are fine with whatever standard medium to short style a guy chooses to wear as long as the style fully suits and is kept clean and looking well groomed and the guy doesn't spend a lot of time on his hair. If a guy wants to go to a shorter style for the summer or one of his sporting activities, that is fine with most girls too even when she prefers that he wear a somewhat longer style. Most high school and college guys around here are wearing regular haircuts, though some have switched to ivy leagues or crew cuts for the summer and will probably grow them back out to regular haircuts in the fall or winter. Hair grows at an average rate of 1/8" per week. A photo is the best way to describe a style to a barber or stylist.

Some barbers consider that all crew cuts should have a flat top, so it is best to not rely on words alone for even a widely recognized style like a crew cut.

Starting from a butch or short crew cut, a guy can grow out his hair and have it look great as it grows out if he keeps up with haircuts, getting a slightly longer style each haircut. Assuming an average rate of hair growth of 1/8" per week and haircuts every three weeks, the following styles are a haircut apart: short crew cut; medium crew cut; short ivy league; ivy league; long ivy league; short regular haircut, regular haircut. Search the internet for images of football(soccer)star Lukas Podolski for examples of ivy league and crew cut styles. A minute dab of control wax aka butch wax will keep the hair looking well groomed at crew cut and ivy league length. A butch comb also helps with grooming the short pomp styles- the small, flat, plastic, oval, pocket brushes that one finger fits through and barbers sell for about a dollar. A boar bristle military brush is usually available for a few dollars and while too large for a guy to carry in his pocket, is nice to have at home.

An ivy league, is considered to be a convertible haircut as it can be styled several ways...

    1) Lightly waxed, side parted and brushed to the side with a short pompadour at the front hairline.

2)) Lightly waxed, side parted and brushed to the side without a short pompadour at the front hairline.

    3) Lightly waxed and brushed back off the forehead like a crew cut.

    4) Lightly waxed with the top hair brushed forward and the short bangs on the forehead like a forward brush.
