The U.S. has made bad decisions all over the MIddle East. It began with a plan in 1998 to destroy the region on behalf of Israel. The U.S. thinks it can bomb every country into compliance. All they do is make more enemies and enrich the war machine.
You are right. The U.S. was tricked into backing National Syrian Council to overthrow the secular government of Assad as it was tricked by Iraqi businessmen to overthrow Saddam. This was similar to backing opposition in Libya and Ukraine. This move gave opponents and then jihadis opportunity to take over the fight and make this a jihadi war to create the Islamic state, which is now happening.
Rockefeller Repub: Who do you think are part of the ISIS? They want revenge for the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq which made Iraqi businessmen living in Paris and London money and did nothing to help the ordinary guy. How can U.S. be so incompetent?

A stable government is better than no government at all. Think how we could negotiate with the former soviet and knew they had complete control over their nukes and how scared everyone was when it broke up that some faction might launch one.. Same scenario in the mid east and any where really.
