why do people confuse the hedgehog and the porcupine?

Update:

cause I volunteer at a zoo and I bring out a hedgehog and just about everyone says it's a baby porcupine! it surprised me cause I assume that everyone has seen a hedgehog and everyone has at least seen a porcupine before. they look completely different. would you guys get confused between these two animals?

Update 2:

I do live in California, where hedgehogs are illegal to have, so maybe that's why people don't know.

    Rather difficult to confuse them -- hedgehogs and porcupine don't inhabit the same environments!
