How long does it take to remember Japanese basic alphabet (aka Hiragana and Katakana) for average people?

Update:

I read people who took about 2~4 days to several weeks, but recently I read that someone who did both of them with like 3~5 hours.

It took me about nearly a month just memorizing (not mastering it) hiragana (not including dakuten) so should I just quit before spending too much time and realizing talent matters in everything including studying a new language?

(took college-level Japanese for two semesters)

I would dare to say a few days at most, assuming you constantly practice and put some effort into it. Because there's a pattern to it, it's easier than it seems. 3-5 hours doesn't seem farfetched, but I think you need to reinforce periodically after that.

A good way to learn would be to use flash cards; make sure you recognize both the look and the sound (and preferably, the stroke order). You can also Google some hiragana/katakana quiz websites if you don't want to make flashcards.

Just a note though; although hiragana/katakana is straightforward enough, what makes Japanese tough is the sheer amount of kanji and vocabulary that needs to be memorized (assuming you really want to be fluent). (And there's also syntax of course). If you really want to learn, there's no substitute for putting in the time and effort.

    Best of luck!
