Should I get a budgie from a breeder or pet shop?

I have seen the budgies in my area on breeder websites and the living conditions don't look great, the birds are suspiciously cheap but are hand-raised.

I went to a trusted local pet store and their budgies were in very clean cages, all look very healthy but aren't tame.

Should I go for the potential health risk but tame birds or the healthy but wild store birds?

One breeder is even selling off known-infected birds (french moult) and it just doesn't seem right.

I'm in Australia & the better breeders are in different cities too far from me!

If the living conditions aren't clean then I would suggest against buying a budgie from those breeders. There's no guarantee a breeder knows what they are doing when they breed their birds. Some birds from breeders are the equivalent of a store bought bird. If you go with a breeder then make sure the birds look healthy and the cages are clean, etc.

All 3 of my budgies have been bought from the pet shop and they were easy enough to tame. It takes a little bit of patience but it's very rewarding to have a little budgie sitting by your side and whistling in your ear.

I'd say go for the store bought if you are worried about the breeder ones being sick.

If you are buying from a store then check to make sure it's a baby first, the lines on the budgies head should go all the way down to its cere. It should have completely black eyes and only buy it if it looks healthy.

Take a look at its beak before you buy it too, my budgie that I bought 2 months ago has kind of like an overbite, her beak doesn't close properly and it has to be trimmed fortnightly.

The beak should look like this http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/CaspirKay/...

Hi, I would always advise you buy a baby budgie from a breeder. There are a number of reasons why. 1) You get to meet the parents of the baby budgie you get. 2) If you order your bird a month or so before hand, a breeder can handle a chick and get it really tame (Half the battle to get a budgie talking) 3) Quite often, a breeder can determine what sex some of his chicks are while still in the nest. But he'/she has to use the right sexed linked varieties to do this. 4) they are often cheaper 5) they'll be six weeks old when you get one, not a 6 week old you get in a pet shop that's been there for weeks. I sell my birds at £7.50 (approx $15 ) where in my local pet shop the at double that some times more.

A reputable breeder. You'll need referrals from trusted people. Hand-fed/raised babies are usually best. However, birds have their own personalities, and a hand-raised bird is not a guarantee that it will have a sweet personality.

Some breeders will ship a bird to you, but it may be expensive.

I would say breeder.. Sometimes animal abuse goes on in pet stores which makes humans untrustable to your bird
