About Bose Acoustimass 5 speakers?

I've been using these speakers, bought new about 1992, as my rear surround speakers with my 5.1 system. It's time to reinstall, since I just moved again, and I'm wondering: do I NEED the passive woofer, for surround speakers, or does the powered one take care of ALL the bass? Not using that extra box would sure save hassel, and wire, and floorspace!

Update:

It may be time to get some new rear-speakers, though these sound pretty good still.

There's no way that the two small speakers can do bass. So yes, you need the bass module.

The other option is to buy some GOOD speakers...

Think I'll go with the second option -- these speakers are about 20 years old and they weren't great to start with!
