Can you qualify for disadvantaged economic status if you are a dependent?

Update:

I do not have a job (only student loans) and my dad claims me as a dependent.

Need to know for a scholarship question (financial aid people at my school haven't responded yet).

Yes, dear you sure can. The scholarship doesn't have anything to do with whether you are a dependent or NOT. Most students are dependents. If you come from a disadvantaged neighborhood you can qualify. If NOT, then NO, you won't qualify. See this link for more info.

If your Dad (or parents) don't make much money and will share with you their tax return, you can complete a FAFSA and apply for financial aid.

Generally, if you are a dependent your eligibility for benefits is based on the person of whom you are a dependent--you might be able to get a benefit if they also have a low income, or they might get it on your behalf.

Welfare qualification in the US is based on household income not just that of the individual.
