I can't remember seeing gooseberries sold in a store here in Canada more than once in 50 years of grocery shopping. Never seen them in the US either. They are not popular, or even very well known, in North America.

You don't see many gooseberries in the markets. Like currants they're a bit of a specialty fruit because there are some diseases that make them harder to grow than blueberries or cranberries.
They don't lend themselves to mass cultivation or organic cultivation the way the half dozen most popular berries do.
