-3 baby american toads had them for about a month

RES can get into their 50s. I knew the woman whose turtles set the record and they outlived her. I was very PO'ed to learn that her will stipulated that they be euthanized upon her death. Paints can probably go a couple of decades, the toads a few years. Goldfish, IDK, but it would not surprise me to learn that they can go on and on and on.

Depends on how you care for them and treat them to make sure they stay healthy.
