Is England as bad as I'm led to believe?

Everyone I know who has been to England told me that it was a very rainy, snobby, depressing and just in general hostile place. And the few English immigrants and travelers I've met seem to fit the description. I'm traveling to Europe and want to know if I should skip the place.

Gee, these people you talked to must have been a great barrell of laughs themselves by the sound of things. If they in fact visited I bet they never made it beyond London. Snobby? There's over 65 million people, hardly likely to be all 'snobby' just as they are not all 'rich' or 'posh'. I came to the UK from outside the country years ago and found most of them incredibly kind...but honest. None of this fawning all over you in an over the top manner then forgetting your existence the next day, which I have found in certain North American countries.

The country has some of the best scenery and best preserved historical sites in Europe, all within a small area, ranging from 5000 year old monuments like Stonehenge to stunning castles, and preserved cities like York, Chester, Bath etc.

And rain? Three weeks ago it was over 80 degrees. It is changeable, the country is on the Atlantic, so that is to be expected but it doesn't rain every day and it seldom gets extremely cold. Belgium and parts of France and Germany can be just as grey and damp.

The person who asked this question sounds like a real idiot to believe such things. Tarring a whole nation of people. Best you stay away if you can't visit with an open mind. Because it seems you already have a negative perception firmly implanted in your mind!

Not at all. you will get unpleasant and hostile people some place in most countries. A lot of tourists only go to london and that is its own little world of its own and like a lot of big cities, the centre is very busy and unpersonal. The thing about england raining all the time is a myth. i lived in bournemouth and it has a very nice moderate climate. pity its such a boring town

"Bad" is relative. But I will say the idea that most British people are rich and shop at a store like Harrod's is a myth. 40% of British people live in public housing, but tumble dryers as status symbols, then don't use them "because it's too expensive".

It does rain a lot, but that again is relative. Compared to the spot in Hawaii, it hardly rains, but compared to Sydney or Washington DC, it positively pours, especially the further north or west you go.

It's worth seeing, but just be prepared that the tourist attractions are just that: tourist attractions.

Ultimately its your decision. I have been twice and ran across both friendly and unfriendly people there, the most friendly people I met were in the pubs and clubs. During my most recent visit, London and some of the more popular areas didnt even resemble what it was on my first visit in the 90's. It seemed to me that the immigrants have moved in, taken over, and ruined the place. Maybe that has something to do with the negitive attitude of the locals.

I think England is great! But not the most exciting place in Europe, in my opinion.
