40a^2 - 32a <<< most work is done in your head ... what number divides into 40 and 32?? (called largest (or greatest) common factor) 8 and a is in both so it is also a common factor so the GCF = 8a
now divide 8a into 40 a^2 --- 5a ...divide 8a into -32a --- -4
so ... = 8a(5a - 4) <<< answer
x^2 - 9x - 22 <<< what are factors of -22 that add to -9??? -2 X 11 adds to +9 so that does not work ... +2 X -11 = -22 and +2 + -11 = -9 so these will work
= (x + 2)(x - 11) <<< answer
Most of this factoring work is done in your head .... Learn the "rules" or patterns of factoring ... binomials have one set of rules, trinomials a different set. Learn how to recognize them and their different rules.
