On a quiz (worth 25 points) the scores for eight srudents were 16,17,18,20,22,23,25, and 25.
1. If the mean of the scores for the nine students was 21, then what was the missing score?
2. If the median of the scores was 22, then what are the possible scores for the missing ninth student?

(16 + 17 + 18 + 20 + 22 + 23 + 25 + 25 + x) / 9 = 21
(166 + x) / 9 = 21
166 + x = 189
x = 23
x >= 22

1) The sum of all of the number listed for the 8 students + x. divide all of this by 9 and set equal to 21
16+17+18+20+22+23+25+25 = 166
(166 + x) / 9 = 21
multiply by 9
166 + x = 189
subtract 166
x = 23
The missing score is 23
2) put the numbers in order (like you already did in the question):
16,17,18,20,22,23,25,25
There are 4 numbers left of the 22 and 3 to the right.
This means that you need an additional number on the right side of the 22.
Your options could be 22, 23, 24, or 25

x = missing score...9 { 21) = x + sum of the other 8 scores
median ----> middle score...thus anything ≥ 22
