305 HEADS ARE TERRIBLE! The valves and ports are too small. The small intake port, 180cc 66cc combustion chamber cast iron Chevrolet heads are your best bet for power and torque. The part number is -

The 305 engine was an engine failure concept of GM. They were attempting to build a V8 to please governmental emissions and fuel economy regulations. It also was hoped it would please purchasers enough compared to all other car makers attempts. An engine power is a combination of many parts. Older performance was based on pistons cams etc with high compression and carbureted to match. The generation engine you have lowered the compression and used emissions designed cams and heads. As an example 10.00-1 compression was common on 60's engines, in 1978 8.5-1 was common. Todays engines found ways to dump more air into the cylinders so the lower compression pistons were no issue. That 305 however can be worked over and made to run well but likely wont pass emissions. A performance cam and the 350 heads from that year corvette would be the best option. remember pistons were different on the camelback engine than the 305 smog block. Heads only flow whats available in and out of the block. The piston draws and pushes, the intake passes cold air and the exhaust manifold sends out the burned gasses. Camshaft changes the amounts of fuel and air as well as the amount of exhaust leaving. Heads assist the cam.

I have a 350 from the mid 70s, I was thinking about changing heads for more H.P. and compression, I have 2 friends that insist on different heads. 1 guy says i need Vortek heads from a 95-2000 chevy 350, The other says 305 heads, they act as fuelie heads. I am not very familiar with this. Please help Thank you
