Highly likely.

There is no "new" virus.

There is a viral outbreak of a type that's kind of rare, but it's been in the U.S. since the 1960s:

"This particular type of enterovirus — EV-D68 — is uncommon, but not new. It was first identified in the 1960s."

Probably the reason it's not well-known is that its symptoms are just like any other flu or cold virus, so until there's a huge outbreak it wouldn't show up on the CDCs radar.
