86 Chevy 3/4 350 ignition mystery. I turn the key and get nothing. No click or any indication that any connection was attempted.?MORE??????

Dash indicators come on. This has happened 4 or 5 times days or weeks apart over the past months. After 3 or 4 tries it has always started... until Monday when after repeated 9 or 10 tries including moving shifter and steering column (adjustable) I tried later in the day and the next morning to no avail.

I had the truck towed to the garage where they could NOT get it to fail. They tried all day Tuesday and today as well. They did not want to start replacing parts randomly (starter and a nearby relay are less than a year old) and did not think it was the ignition switch. They said it could be 'something' in the column.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? HELP!

If it was the solenoid, you would at least hear it click. You either have really dirty or loose battery cable connections on the battery, or on the solenoid. If it was the safety switch, moving it to neutral instead of park would start the truck. There are 2 start safety positions, Park and Neutral. The safety switch is in the transmission if it is automatic and the safety switch is part of the brake system all mounted on the brake pedal assembly if it is manual transmission. I love these problems where people neglect to mention whether it is an automatic or manual transmission.

Thanks to all - first answer gets best selection since all are about the same. Starter and solenoid are new - battery and cables are new - transmission is automatic ( didn't think there were many trucks with manual) and I have NEVER made a point to press the brake when starting ANY vehicle I drove.

The most common fault is the neutral safety switch. But it could also be you forgot something basic, like pressing the brake pedal while trying to start?

could also be a dead spot on starter solenoid......if it does it again....take something and tap on starter couple good smacks and see if it starts....if it does it needs to be replaced......
