The fruit of knowledge is the ability to sense the evil in one's own heart. One can act on it, or have the faith to ask for it's removal from the conscience. That freedom to choose is based on the redeeming spirit of Yahweh. Every time we face a moral choice it is whether to bite into the fruit, or abstain.

God knew that once innocence is gone, there would be sin and death in the world.

for the wages of sin are death.

First of all, we do not have free will, but a determinate will that is determined by the nature of our intellect. The idea of "freedom to choose" is the concept that is based on knowledge of good and evil because it is rooted in ignorance of our selves as determinant beings produced by dialectical causes and effects of historical materialist bodies and their motions. The ordering of our intellect on the basis of knowledge of "good and evil" is the cause of sin and death because it is relativistic knowledge based on the human ego and selfish desires and wants. What people call "good" is that which gives pleasure, and evil is that which gives "pain". If one "eats" of this type of knowledge there is no basis of truth nor justice. God, infinite and eternal, as in the Bible, is a perfect substance of a determinate existence and essence. Adapting our intellect to what is true, rejecting what is false, is the basis of the tree of life (based on knowledge of true and false). Moses Maimonides, in the book Guide to the Perplexed, explained this in greater detail. It was this concept that inspired theological thinkers like Spinoza, Leibniz, N. Cusa, G. Bruno, and others, to deny free will and put forward doctrines based on adapting our minds to reality, physical nature, and to the correct order and connection of things as they are in their historical materialist relationships. This would end the conflict between science and theology, and would supersede the religions of the world. All religion "eats" of the tree of knowledge of good and evil because each seeks their own "good", in the pleasure gotten to adapting reality to the dead tablets in their minds, to dogmas and superstitions each in conflict with all other religious teachings. Religion is theo-illogical, not theo-logical. We are to eat of the "tree of life", which is the mind-set of all godly peoples who believe in the holy human spirit of agape (seeking justice for others) and not of seeking knowledge based on egoistic motives born from eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Modern "Christianity" just simply gets it wrong in their false evolution into imperialist and capitalistic forms that serve the multitude of conflicting dogmas and doctrines born from historical forces that represent the lies and justifications of oppressive ruling classes. "Yahweh" is not historically correct, as one finds many references to Jehovah as the correct term based on the HVH verb meaning "to be" . All reality is a single Substance as both David Bohm and Albert Einstein have stated. This means that "god does not play with dice", and defends a physical determinism. Which is a noble thing in that it makes it possible to adapt our minds to the correct order and connection of things because they follow determinate laws of nature independent of our thinking of them. Hence we can discover the geometrical ethical order from the study of nature itself, which all humans are a part of.
