    They still enter the Champions League as this is the priority competition. An example being Chelsea in 2013-14.

    .

    I quote the following:

    "...

    Titleholder

    2.06 Unless the UEFA Europa League titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Champions League through its domestic championship, it is guaranteed a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

    ..."

    from the Document titled:

    " Regulations of the UEFA Europa League

    ..... 2012-15 Cycle

    ..... 2014/15 Season "

    ..... which implies that the Winner of the Europa League Trophy is NOT necessarily entitled to defend the Trophy during the following season IF it also qualifies for the Champions' League through its domestic League.

    I also quote the following :

    "...

    3.02 If two or more clubs fail to meet the criteria aimed at ensuring the integrity of the competition, only one of them may be admitted to a UEFA club competition, in accordance with the following criteria (applicable in descending order):

    a) the club which qualifies on sporting merit for the more prestigious UEFA club competition (i.e., in descending order: UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League);

    b) the club which has the highest priority access by virtue of its performance in its top domestic league championship and as indicated in the 2014/15 access list (Annex Ia);

    c) the club which has the best club coefficient ranking as established in accordance with paragraph 9.02.

    Clubs that are not admitted are replaced in accordance with paragraph 2.11.

    ..."

    from the Document titled:

    " Regulations of the UEFA Champions League

    ..... 2012-15 Cycle

    ..... 2014/15 Season "

    In which, the sections and subsections allude to the fact that :

    rules governing the allocation of places in the Champions' League and Europa League .....

    (although defined globally for all national member Associations)

    ..... are in practice liable to be INTERPRETED differently, depending upon such things as the number of Clubs entitled to enter the two Competitions.

    It is generally speaking much easier to interpret such Rules in the light of a SPECIFIC set of circumstances that occur as and when those circumstances arise.

    Re: Your update:

    It depends on multiple issues including:

    (a) whether or not the Europa Trophy winner's Domestic League is (in principle) entitled to four places in the Champions' League;

    (b) whether or not the Europa Trophy winning Club ACTUALLY applies to enter the Champions' League .....

    (on the basis of having won the Europa League or on the basis of having attained a fourth placing in its Domestic League)

    ..... in accordance with the rules applicable to the application form procedures and time table as laid down or amended by circular letters.

    For example:

    if the Europa League Trophy winner WANTED to defend their Trophy more than they wanted to enter the Champion's League, they could simply avoid returning the relevant Application Form by the specified date (likely to be around 2 June 2015),

    ..... or such earlier date as might ( between now and about 2 June 2015) have been promulgated by a circular letter from UEFA for that ad hoc purpose.

    Note also, that the ACTUAL document governing the Regulations for the 2015/16 Season (to which you seem to be alluding) appear not to have been published yet, and could be modified in the interim period.
