House AC is frozen, why would that happen?

Update:

Got a call from our ac repairman. He's telling me that the ac is frozen and needs to thaw overnight before he can fix it tomorrow. I neglected to ask him why this would happen. I can talk to him about it tomorrow, but wondering whether anyone on Y!A today has experienced this with their home acs. Thanks.

Update 2:

The air flow is significantly decreased, and what little air that does come out isn't cold air. Much appreciate your thoughts on this.

Update 3:

Both of you provided great answers, and I chose Mr. Jetson because he was first to answer. Thank you both!

One common cause is a dirty filter. Airflow is everything in AC, you have to have enough flow to dump sufficient heat onto the coils to prevent freezing.

Another cause is fan failure. If your blower is running slow, that can cause a similar problem. You would probably notice the system sounding different, however.

Your indoor coils might be dirty. This is a problem similar to that of the dirty filter, with the exception being that you can't just yank off the dirt and toss it with the filter. This will require some disassembly and thorough cleaning. And even if you always do a great job of replacing the filter, no filter is 100%. Stuff gets through, and some of it sticks to the coils. Over the years, it builds up.

You might have a low refrigerant level. That possibility exists. These other possibilities, however, are cheaper and you can do something about them for yourself. Get crackin, maybe you can save yourself some money.
