Atheists: if you had a friend who told you his near death experience in hell would that make you seek Jesus Christ?

There have been studies to prove that NDEs are hallucinations brought on by a lack of oxygen to the brain. No, it wouldn't make me seek Jesus.

I am not sure my answer may interest you but, I am atheist and six years ago, I suffered a heart attack followed by a five minutes cardiac arrest that was, luckily, restarted with a defibrillator. I have now an ICD (Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator) and I am happy. I had no experience in hell nor anywhere else during those 5 minutes of coma. But, all my life, I have tried to live by the teaching of Jesus Christ, of love for my neighbours and forgiveness for my enemies. Jesus, the man, not the son of God, in my humble opinion. What does that make me?

No, now if I had an NDE and saw hell it still wouldn't make me seek Jesus Christ. If you wanted to know that.

No, because I know NDEs are hallucinations and there's nothing consistent about their content. I know Christians are only allowed to hear about the ones that involve Christian imagery, but people see a wide variety of things.

Different religions have different NDE experiences. That means either that all gods exist, or that it is just a psychological defence mechanism. I think I'll go for the latter.

I believe in the real Buddhist Hell, Samsara, which is also sometimes heaven. I like Jesus, he was just trying to change the world for the better, and they nailed him to something.

I'm not atheist, but there are NDE's that describe Mohammed or Buddha. Does that mean we should all seek Mohammed and Buddha, too?
- Let Me ThinkLv 67 years ago
No. It's not an issue of who reports the experience (my friend vs. someone I never met), it's that near-death experiences are not compelling evidence.

My reaction would depend on what this hypothetical friend reported. If your friend reported a NDE of visiting Valhalla would you reject Jesus and seek Odin?

My Uncle had visions of flying horses, he was being operated on for the removal of a Brain Tumour at the time, he blamed it on his subconscious mistaking the old fashioned hospital beds for a winged horse, he thought it was hellish.
