Swelling in dogs leg?

Last Wednesday evening my almost 8 year old American Bulldog/Staffy started limping. No heat or swelling.

Thursday morning, there was quite a bit of swelling...ok, a LOT

Took him to the vet. X-rays were clean, blood work was clear. Took him back on Friday for needle biopsy, which was inconclusive. He DOES have a history of cancer. He had a hemangiosarcoma tumor removed from a hind leg 3 1/2 years ago. His blood work at that time was also clear. But, we haven't ruled out soft tissue injury yet either.

He is on prednisone, amoxicillin and tramadol.

He started the meds Friday evening, it's now Monday morning, and there is only a SLIGHT decrease in the swelling.

How much decrease in the swelling would you expect?

I will be talking to the vet later today (it's only 5:30am here) and taking him back in tomorrow)

Give the meds and the prescribed rest to work at least two weeks, in the mean time keep in contact with your vet.

One of my dogs had a soft tissue injury a week ago last Thursday and is still on the antibiotics(clavamox), twice daily and cleansing twice daily with chlorhexidene, she was on pain meds(metacam) for just a week, but every case is different.

She is confined to house/crate rest for two weeks and has a follow up visit this Thursday. Believe me that is very hard on a JRT, only allowed to walk on leash to go potty.

My other JR wasn't injured as seriously so he was on clavamox for only a week, no metacam, and is still on the twice daily cleansing but goes in and out the dogie door from sunrise to sunset, not a happy camper either as he can't run with his sister, and because I'm disabled I can barely walk the other one, have already started letting her out on her own for short periods as she isn't limping any more and off the metacam .

Whenever I had any questions I picked up the phone and called the vets office.

More information would help, but the only answer to this question as it is, is if this is something new, see your vet. And probably sooner rather than later.
