Partly because they can give people ideas about what to wear, and partly because people enjoy the fantasy of the expensive clothes celebrities can afford to buy. Most of the people who buy Vogue, for example, can't afford the clothes pictured, but that doesn't stop them from buying the magazine.
An interest in fashion seems to be almost instinctive among women and even many men. I actually wonder whether we are neurologically hardwired for it. Whatever the case, celebrities wear fashionable clothes, and people simply enjoy looking at them, much as they might enjoy a work of art or fine plumage on a bird.

Because it is crammed down our throats. I don't care about celebrities, yet it's part of the news these days. Why??? We build these people up as demigods and then pant after them like they are something special. I don't get it. It's like we set ourselves up for this. It's all make believe. They are there to entertain us. We are the ones with the real lives. It's insanity.

It's the herd instinct. Or 'monkey see, monkey do'. People who lack original thought like to copy others as they think some talent will attach to themselves. All rather sad in my view.
